Photoshop Tutorial - Sisters

So, I decided to make my very first photoshop tutorial for Abduzeedo. The image that I will show the step by step is this one called “Sisters”, hope you like and learn guys, a big hug.

Step 1

First of all, open photoshop and creat a new document. This new document should have 1680 x 1050 pixels. Now, I used this image of this wood texture, you can download it here. Open the photo and paste it on the 1680 x 1050 canvas.

Step 2

Then you have to duplicate this layer (ctrl + J / command + J) and desaturate it (ctrl + shift + U / command + shift + U). After this, choose the Blending Mode called Soft Light. This will make the image more sharp and dark.

Step 3

Now acess Adjustments > Brightness / Contrast panel and adjust Brightness to 0 and contrast to 100. This will make the texture more sharp and dark.

Step 4

Acess again Adjustments, then Levels panel and adjust the levels to 26 / 1,00 / 255 , just like the picture below. Now this texture is almost dramatic as we wanted.

Step 5

Acess again Adjustments, then Curves panel. Now we have to make three points on this curves graphic, adjust the first one with Output 54 an Input 102, just like the picture below.

Adjust the second one with Output 24 an Input 34, just like the picture below.

And finally, adjust the third one with Output 148 an Input 176, just like the picture below.

Now we’re done with the Background, the result should be like this:

Step 6

Now download this little girls photo here. Open it in Photoshop, copy and paste it in the canvas. Then using the Free Transform ( ctrl + T / command + T ) , resize it and rotate till you got this:

Done that, create a rectangle using the Rectangle Tool ( U ) and place his layer before the photo, the result should be this, creating a white border on the picture:

Step 7

Desaturate the image ( ctrl + shift + U / command + shift + U ), then using the Brush Tool ( B ) cover the girls eyes with black. Now with the Smudge Tool ( the one with a finger pointing ) use a 8 pixels diameter brush to create this expressions on the girls lips, the result should be like these:

Step 8

Duplicate the girls layer ( ctrl + J / command + J ) and choose the Blending Mode called Hard Light. The image will get more dark and heavy with this.

Step 9

Duplicate the first girls layer ( ctrl + shift + J / command + ctrl + J ) and put it the top. Acess Filters > Other > High Pass and adjust Radius to 9,9 pixels, just like the picture below.

Then, choose the Blending Mode called Soft Light, your image should get sharpier like this:

Step 10

Create a new layer ( ctrl + shift + n / command + shift + n ) and draw these tears on the girls faces with the Brush Tool ( B ), then choose the Blending Mode called Soft Light.

In order to make it more evident, duplicate this layer ( ctrl + J / command + J ) and you should get this:

Step 11

Select the girls photo ( ctrl + click / command + click ) and make a new layer ( ctrl + shift + N / command + shift + N ).

Now creat a radial gradient in this area with the Gradient Tool ( G ), you should get something like these:

Then, change the Opacity of this layer to 70 % , he’s gonna get like this:

Finally, choose the Blending Mode called Multiply, the light oh the gilrs pic will get more centralized and harmonic, your result should be like the image below:

Step 12

Remember the white rectangle? So, select him ( ctrl + click / command + click ) and create a new layer ( ctrl + shift + N / command + shift + N ). Now get this paper texture here and desaturate it ( ctrl + shift + U / command + shift + U ). Copy and paste it right in the white rectangle selection, like this:

Now choose the Blending Mode called Darken.

Right click on this image and select Blending Options > Drop Shadow and adjust Opacity to 100% , Distance to 0 pixels , Spread to 23% and Size to 35 pixels. The final result should be this:

Step 13

Duplicate this texture layer ( ctrl + J / command + J ) and use the Invert effect ( ctrl + I / command + I ). Change it Blending Mode to Soft Light, make a Mask and clear with the Brush Tool ( B ) these areas:

Step 14

Create a new layer ( ctrl + shift + n / command + shift + n ) and draw with the Brush Tool ( B ) with black some tiny lines in the mouth of the girls to enhance it gloomy look.

Create a new layer ( ctrl + shift + n / command + shift + n ) and draw with the Brush Tool ( B ) with red the nose of the girls, like a clown ( a bad clown in this case), then choose the Blending Mode called Soft Light, you may get this result:

Step 15

Choose the whole girls image selection by clicking on the white rectangle layer ( ctrl + click / command + click ) than create a new layer ( ctrl + shift + n / command + shift + n ) and make a linear gradient like this with the Gradient Tool ( G ).

Then change it’s Opacity to 45%, it should get like this:

Choose the Blending Mode called Multiply and we’re done with the girls manipulation.

Step 16

Download the image of the pin here. Cut it and his shadow with the Lasso ( L ) or the Pen Tool ( P ), copy and paste it on the canvas. Using the Free Transform ( ctrl + T / command + T ) rotate and put the pin and his shadow like this:

Separate the Shadow and the pin in two different layers by cutting and duplicating. Now select the shadow layer and change it opacity to 70%, then select the Blending Mode called Multiply, this shall be the result:

Step 17

Now we have to make this pin more gloomy, duplicate the pin layer ( ctrl + shift +J / command + shift + J ) , desaturate it ( ctrl + shift + U / command + shift +U ) and chosse the Blending Mode called Soft Light, it shall get darker.

Duplicate the original layer of the pin ( ctrl + J / command + J ) and go to Filters > Other > High Pass and adjust Radius to 9,9 pixels, just like the picture below.

Then select the Blending Mode called Overlay and you should get this result:

Step 18

To get a more realistic effect of the pin, i used a Crack Brush, there are lot of this kind of brush to download, you can have some of them here. Try to get this crack on the end of the pin in order to look like the photo was perforated.

Step 19

Now the blood is a splatter brush in red color, you can download some of this here. Try to find one with little drops to look more like blood. After that, choose the Blending Mode called Multiply, you should get this result:

Step 20

Final step, now we have to make a main light for all the picture, so create a new layer ( ctrl + shift + n / command + shift + n ) and with the Gradient Tool ( G ) create a radial gradient with it’s center close to the right side of the canvas, see the example below:

Choose the Blending Mode called Overlay and we’re done.

Conclusion

There are many ways to achieve this final result, but basically, you just have to know how to use textures and blending modes wisely.

Mecanicow - Case Study

Hi everyone!

I'm pleased to say that I was one of the artists selected for Cow Parade 2010 Porto Alegre, Brasil.

My inicial concept was to make a customized cow with gears like a engine, but it would take a lot of time and money. Since I didn't have that, I decided to try to apply a style of geometric/tribal illustration that I developed.

The result got really awesome, you can see at the photos above, hope you like. A huge thanks for everyone who supported this project.

Well, you may be asking yourselves why I am not posting frequently as before, there are many reasons but the main are:

- Got a fulltime job;

- I am participating of Cow Parade 2010, so I am really busy with my cow;

- My classes at college started.

Well, now I have to admit that time is short, but since I don't wanna leave you, I;ve started a Tumblr and it's called "Back to Dreams".

Logo Inspiration: Comic characters

It is fact that everyone likes superheroes and other comic book characters. There is a plethora of stories and with subjects ranging from humor to the morbid. Comic books are deeply rooted in global culture, so that today we have several film adaptations of great box office.

Something that is very interesting is when we see superheroes as brands, some of them are easily identifiable by color and shapes. I usually say that the best known are precisely those that generate more memory on the reader. So I decided to make a selection with the logos of super heroes who i thought were the most important and also my favorites. Hope you enjoy.

É fato que todo mundo gosta de super heróis e outros personagens de história em quadrinhos. Existe uma infinidade destes e histórias que variam do humor até temas mórbidos. Histórias em quadrinhos estão profundamente enraizadas na cultura global, tanto que hoje temos diversas adaptações cinematográficas de grande bilheteria.

Algo que é muito interessante é quando tratamos super heróis como marcas, alguns deles são facilmente identificáveis por cores e formas. Costumo dizer que os mais conhecidos são justamente esses que geram mais memória no leitor. Então decidi fazer uma seleção com os logos de super heróis que julguei de maior importância e também meus favoritos. Espero que gostem.

Jellyfish (also known as jellies or sea jellies or medusozoa) are free-swimming members of the phylum Cnidaria. Jellyfish are found in every ocean, from the surface to the deep sea. Jellyfish are composed of more than 90% water; most of their umbrella mass is a gelatinous material — the jelly — called mesoglea which is surrounded by two layers of epithelial cells which form the umbrella (top surface) and subumbrella (bottom surface) of the bell, or body (wikipedia).

I know many of you must hate jellyfish because of its toxicity in some species, but it is undeniable beauty of these animals. A mix of abstract shapes and symmetrical, there is a living being who possesses one of the most interesting life cycles of the animal kingdom. I became interested in the subject so I decided to look for good pictures that show the most color and texture of jellyfish. Hope you enjoy.

Eu sei que muito de vocês devem odiar medusas por causa de sua toxicidade de algumas espécies, mas é inegável a beleza desses animais. Num misto de formas abstratas e simétricas, existe um ser vivo que possuí um dos ciclos de vida mais interessantes do reino animal. Me interessei tanto pelo assunto que resolvi procurar boas fotos que mostrassem ao máximo as cores e texturas das medusas. Espero que gostem.

Snowflakes Photography Inspiration

One of these days I was doing a search for images of nature on Flickr and DevianART and was really impressed with the photos I found of snowflakes. Snowflakes are agglomerates of frozen ice crystals falling through the atmosphere on Earth (Wikipedia). What really attracted me in the snowflakes is the fact that each has a unique, harmonic and almost perfectly symmetrical shape. It's for sure one of the most inspiring, different and beautiful source of inspiration found in nature. Hope you like it and after seeing this collection start to look more closely at all these beautiful forms that are out there in nature.

Um desses dias eu estava fazendo uma pesquisa sobre imagens da natureza no Flickr e no DevianART e realmente fiquei impressionado com as fotos que encontrei de flocos de neves. Flocos de neve são aglomerados de cristais de gelo congelados que caem através da atmosfera na Terra (Wikipedia). O que realmente me atrái nos flocos de neve é o fato de que cada um tem uma forma única, hârmonica e quase que perfeitamente simétrica. Com certeza é uma das fontes de inspiração mais lindas e diferentes encontrada na natureza. Espero que vocês gostem e após ver essa coleção passem a observar mais atentamente todas essas formas belas que estão lá fora na natureza.

Anaglyph images are used to provide a stereoscopic 3D effect, when viewed with 2 color glasses (each lens a chromatically opposite color, usually red and cyan). Images are made up of two color layers, superimposed, but offset with respect to each other to produce a depth effect. Usually the main subject is in the center, while the foreground and background are shifted laterally in opposite directions. The picture contains two differently filtered colored images, one for each eye. When viewed through the "color coded" "anaglyph glasses", they reveal an integrated stereoscopic image. The visual cortex of the brain fuses this into perception of a three dimensional scene or composition. (Wikipedia)

Since the current fashion of cinemas and other media to re-invest in 3D technologies, I decided it would be interesting to assemble a collection of various images anaglyphs. Hey guys, everything okay?

I know we are far from Halloween, but after seeing several pictures of pumpkin art, I had to create a post on the subject

How many of you may know, the tradition of "trick or treating" and create jack-o-lanterns "refers since ancient times.

In fact, the pumpkin is carved the definitive symbol of Halloween, and the story of "jack-o-lantern" has several versions in different cultures, you can read more about it here.

Eu sei que estamos muito longe do Halloween, mas após ver diversas fotos de arte em abóboras, eu tive que montar um post sobre o assunto.

Como muitos de vocês devem saber, a tradição "doces ou travessuras" e de criar "jack-o-lanterns" remete desde os tempos remotos.

De fato, a abobóra escavada é o símbolo definitivo do Halloween, sendo que a história de "jack-o-lantern" possui diversas versões em diversas culturas, você pode ler mais sobre o assunto aqui.

I'm in a worry today so I'm gonna be straigh: "The Eye" is my last photomanipulation. It took me about 3 to 4 days to finish it, because I didn't liked most of the results.

I used basically Photoshop for the mixing and finalization and Google Sketch Up for the 3D shapes.

Hey buddies, I made a great collection of stereoscopic images, these images present a technique that can be explained by overlapping our left and right eyes usually do about an image.

Ei camaradas, montei uma coleção de ótimas imagens stereoscopicas, estas imagens apresentam uma técnica que pode ser explicada pela sobreposição que nossos olhos esquerdo e direito costumam fazer sobre uma imagem.

The title was took from the famous quote "Is better to burn out than fade away" by Kurt Cobain. Being a huge fan of Nirvana, I could't help to don't do this.

Blaxploitation is a very important genre in cinema, since these were the first films in which african descent had a chance to be protagonists. Much of blaxploitation movies like feature has to be made and directed by blacks, so it received this name. It is important to note that since most of these films from the early '70s, they followed predominantly black musical movements such as Funk and Soul, and even James Brown has acted in several films of the genre. In the case of graphic design, gender contributed much to create posters with great use of typography, using paintings or photos of major artists so harmonious, beautiful and, above all, in a stylish way.

Blaxploitation é um gênero muito importante no cinema, visto que estes eram os primeiros filmes em que negros tiveram a chance de serem protagonistas. Muitos dos filmes blaxploitation têm como caracteristica serem feitos e dirigidos por negros, por isso receberam este nome. É importante notar que, sendo grande parte desses filmes provenientes do início dos anos 70, eles acompanharam movimentos musicais predominante negros como o Funk e o Soul, sendo que até mesmo James Brown já atuou em vários filmes do gênero. Tratando-se de design gráfico, o gênero contribuiu muito ao criar pôsteres com tipografias bem elaboradas em conjunto com pinturas ou fotos dos artistas principais de maneira harmonica, bonita e, acima de tudo, estilosa.

It's been a long time I have noticed that there are several posters of famous and cults movies circulating on the Internet. But the big difference is that these were examples of brilliant reinterpretations made by several designers. What is most interesting in these reinventions is that they manage to convey ideas and concepts of the films in different, but brilliant ways. From the entire collection of works that I collected my absolute favorite is Youssef Ibrahim and his minimalist work.

Good Afternoon buddies! Today I brought to you one of mine recent projects : Help. The main concept of this pic was to show in a explicit and graphic way the three main things that people use to forget and forgive themselves. I believe that you're only going to be free if you don't have any addiction. I know I cannot judge all the persons that smoke or are alcoholic, because, most of the time, I really don't know what they have been thru to end this way. We use this things to forget reality, to get into imaginary and happiest landscapes, but it's all a lie, and it's soon as it pass, we need another dose, turning ourselves in dependents of those things. In other project mine "Realize", I've talked about life and it's meaning, here I and just trying to emphatize it again.

Cinesofia # 2 - Scarface

Bom dia pessoal! Hoje vamos a mais um Cinesofia, com o filme Scarface, de 1983, do diretor Brian de Palma. O gênero filmes de Gangsters já tinha grandes nomes já na década de 80, um deles inclusive tinha a participação do protagonista de Scarface: O Poderoso Chefão, que até hoje é considerado o melhor filme de mafia de todos os tempos.Mas não é sobre ele que vamos falar hoje, o filme Scarface na verdade é um remake do filme de 1932 de Howard Hawks, que num caso raro na sétima arte, consegue superar o original de forma magnífica.

Embora muito criticado na época de seu lançamento devido ao conteúdo ofensivo e vulgar (Al Pacino fala a palavra "fuck" 182 vezes, para se ter uma noção), Scarface é uma epopéia sobre o mundo glamouroso do tráfico de drogas na década de 80. Nunca em minha vida vi uma atuação de gangster mais convincente que a de Al Pacino, superando até a sua atuação nos filmes do Poderoso Chefão. Tony Montana é com certeza um dos anti-heróis mais carismáticos que já existiu, desbocado, agressivo e ambicioso, Al Pacino dá uma show de atuação que compete parelho com outra atuação perfeita desse ator no filme Perfume de mulher.

A história do filme a maioria já conhece: Tony Montana é um refugiado cubano que vai para os Estados Unidos após ser liberado de Cuba. Tão logo chega no país Tony e seu amigo Manny se metem no mundo do crime da bela e ensolarada Florida. No decorrer da história é possível assistir há uma extremamente rápida ascensão de Tony de um simples criminoso há um grande chefe da máfia Miami. Contudo, reviravoltas e problemas acabam mudando o rumo da estória de Tony e ele acaba se vendo afundado em sua ganância e egocentrismo, fechando com um final extremamente trágico e dramático para esse personagem brilhante. Declarações a parte, devo admitir que o ritmo do filme é por horas devagar, mas isso se compensa em personagens muito bem construídos e cenas memoráveis.

Confesso que sou um grande fã desse filme, sua influência na cultura é tão grande que há diversas referências nos mais inimagináveis lugares. Não é nem preciso dizer que a polêmica série de jogos GTA (Grand Theft Auto) foi extremamente inspirada no filme, principalmente o jogo GTA: Vice City que chega a fazer um "Easter egg" do cenário do hotel do filme. Para finalizar pessoal, vou deixar vocês com a minha recriação do famoso poster do filme, espero que gostem e não se esqueçam:

Here's my new project, it's called "Nature shall save us". The main concept of this project was idealized after some observations of the global warming effects around the globe. Recently, Chile and Haiti had some serious problems with earthquakes.

My opinion is that all of this is happening because the human being is mistreating nature for long that she's having her revenge now. We are not alone on this world, we and the plants are earthlings, we should divide this world with responsability and awareness.

The main concept it's obviously to show the deep sorrow of a forsaken heart. That's why the colors are very dead and sad on the background, in contrast with the rust red phrase shaped heart. Bom dia a todos! Estou aqui novamente postando mais um projeto de minha autoria.

A peça "Realize" não foi apenas um exercício de técnica, a aplicação de um recurso tipográfico para diferencia-la é apenas uma parte da composição.

O que acredito ser mais forte neste projeto é o seu conceito, após refletir sofre diversas experiências pessoais e coletivas, cheguei a conclusão que o modelo de vida adotado e glorificado pela sociedade capitalista é o hedonismo.

Para quem não sabe, hedonismo é a doutrina filosófico-moral que acredita que o objetivo do homem é a maximização do prazer e amenização da dor.

Atualmente vemos que não só existe uma pressão por parte mídia mundial, mas por mecanismos da sociedade que estimulam o consumismo, a promiscuidade e a legalização e quebra de regras como o verdadeiro caminho para a felicidade.

Tais coisas podem gerar prazer, sem dúvida, mas prazer é uma sensação efêmera, líquida e totalmente viciante, o que gera uma eterna busca por coisas que trazem "felicidade".

Na peça citei apenas algumas, mas existem diversas, não estou aqui para desmerecer alguêm em específico, mas fazer o questionamento:

Para você, isso é a melhor parte da vida?
Isso é vida para você?
Ou será que essas coisas lhe fizeram se afastar tanto de sí a ponto de se sentir mal sem elas?

Reflitam sobre isso. Carpe diem.

Strength beyond Strength

Bom dia pessoal, estou postando aqui mais um trabalho de minha autoria. Dessa vez resolvi basear esse trabalho em uma música da banda texana Pantera. A música Strenght beyond Strengh pertence ao 3° CD da banda (se excluirmos os de sua fase "glam") "Far Beyond Driven" abrindo o mesmo de maneira alucinante. Uma faixa rápida, crua e extremamente agressiva, as letras criticam valores da sociedade e do indivíduo num tom quase que pessimista/sarcástico. Para tentar transmitir esse mesmo sentimento da música, o projeto foi feito unicamente em tons de cinza, preto e branco (grayscale) para transmitir simplicidade e crueza. A escolha da figura do lutador e dos diversos punhos fechados é uma óbvia referência ao poder e violência extremos. O fundo branco foi escolhido por deixar a imagem que já é bem arrojada mais simples e concentrar o foco da leitura na linha vertical da imagem. Abaixo postei a bendita letra e um vídeo da banda tocando ao vivo a música para aqueles que tenha ficado curiosos, espero que gostem.

iPAD: A grande decepção?

Como muitos sabem, a pouco a Apple lançou sua tão esperada Tablet PC chamada de iPAD. O objeto, segundo muitos já notaram, parece mais um iPhone gigante, com aplicativos de um Macbook implantados e uma tela maior. Além disso, o que mais chocou a opinião pública é o fato de que o iPAD não é multi-tarefas, logo seria este um computador que definiria a geração futura? Não sei dizer ao certo.

Disconnect from The World

Bom dia pessoal, estou aqui postando como foi o processo criativo do meu ultimo projeto "Disconnect from the world". Inicialmente a idéia era antes de tudo criar um poster conceitual que remetesse a posters antigos tanto em termo de tipografia como diagramação e imagem.

É notável em todas essas referências o uso de formas simplificas e mais simbólicas, por isso houve a preocupação dentro do conceito de criar uma imagem que representasse a quebra da conexão com o mundo. O uso do peão, que para muitos lembra o símbolo do Podcast (transmissão ao vivo pela internet) com as ondas de transmissão ao eu redor foi considerada o ícone mais apropriado.

A palavra "disconnect" deveria possuir também uma representação gráfica, tendo isso mente foi pensado em uma intervenção repentina e forte, a figura clássica do raio foi então escolhida para tal.

Para finalizar era necessário a escolha de uma fonte neutra, mas ao mesmo tempo refinada. A fonte Helvetica é uma longa conhecida de Designers do mundo todo, ao mesmo tempo que uma fonte muito usada em posters retros. O resultado final você vê abaixo.
